‘Casino Royale’ Synopsis
After the Russian agent, Le Chiffre, loses 50 million francs in Soviet subsidies by investing in a chain of Parisian brothels three months before the French government bans them, he flees to the Royale-les-Eaux casino in Somme with 25 million francs in a French Communist Party trade union funds. Once there, he schemes to win the money back via a high-stakes baccarat game before anyone is wiser.
Unbeknownst to him, the Russian counter-intelligence agency, SMERSH, already knows he’s lost their money, and they send an agent from the Polish People’s Republic to assassinate him. Out west, the British Secret Intelligence Service (known as MI6) is also aware of Le Chiffre’s plight as mistresses tend to have loose lips and Le Chiffre’s is doing a lot of talking. MI6’s director only know as M approves a plan to send a 00 Agent to play against Le Chiffre in baccarat in hopes of bankrupting him and the union he works for.
M chooses secret agent James Bond—007 for the mission because of his expertise in drinking and gambling. Bond is to go undercover as a wealthy Jamaican planter with another agent named Vesper Lynd as his companion, but in the world of undercover spies, things aren’t always what they seem.
