Last Picture Show is in my top 10, I’m so glad it is being reviewed. I was lucky enough to attend a screening of it a few years ago with Bogdanovich speaking afterwards. As for the breakfast club, I loved it and 16 candles when I saw them on VHS in the 80s(though I was probably a tad too young for it) but I find it pretty strange that they are still so highly regarded today(got the criterion treatment!). They’re nice little movies then and now, not worthy of being on any greatest films list, and not groundbreaking in any way either imo. I thought it was sort of a joke that they had a tribute to john Hughes at the oscars after he passed. It’s not like the guy was Scorsese or something. The fact that breakfast club is considered one of the best films of the 80s shows how weak the 80s were for film, especially American film. Btw you have the wrong release date in the summary.
Have you read Larry McMurtry’s book too. I hear it’s an excellent one.
I haven’t. He seems to have written a few novels that became great films. Btw I think Shane and Bobby deserve a timeout for not putting godfather on their top 100. That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard on mhm:) if Lori did that, Patrick would make fun of her on every podcast for years:)
Ha! They do need some teasing for that.
In a critical Top-100, I’d give The Godfather it’s due. It’s a wonderful film. But I was told it’s my personal top list so gangster films just don’t make the cut. 🙂 But if I had to choose between Gigi or The Godfather I or II (or even III for that matter), mobsters would be in my top-100 before Lori’s pick. 😉
