‘Das Boot’ Plot Summary
It is 1942 and the German submarine fleet is heavily engaged in the so called “Battle of the Atlantic” to harass and destroy English shipping. With better escorts of the Destroyer Class, however, German U-Boats have begun to take heavy losses. Das Boot was not submitted for the best foreign film Oscar by West Germany. Only one film per country is allowed to compete for that category. So it wasn’t really a snub by the academy. I believe it partly got 6 noms because the academy couldn’t nominate it for best foreign film and they wanted to make up for that. 6 noms was a record amount of noms for a foreign film at the time.
Interesting that Matt holds the length of the film against it. It’s too bad he couldn’t see the theatrical cut(only 149 mins) instead of the directors cut. That cut has never been released streaming, you can only purchase it on dvd(bundled with directors cut). The theatrical cut is the version that won all the awards.
Thanks Eddie. Once again, your movie knowledge rules supreme. You sure you don’t want to come on one of the podcasts. We would love to have you.
By the way, would Das Boot be in your top 100?
