Secret Admirer (1985)Secret Admirer – what happens when one person, pretending to be another person, writes an anonymous letter to yet another person – then that letter falls into the wrong hands over and over until everyone thinks the letter was written to them? Well – that’s the story of Secret Admirer – a mash up of every 80s teenage guys movie mashed up into one.

Secret Admirer goes to show that when you combine the hottest new actress on the planet, with the cutest new actress on the planet – you really don’t need to have a good story – guys will watch it anyway.

C Thomas Howell plays Michael – a typical high school guy that’s looking to bag the hottest and most popular girl in school, Deborah Anne, played by Kelly Preston. Unfortunately for Michael, Deborah Anne only dates college guys. But fortunately for Michael, he and Deborah Anne both have the same best friend – Toni, played by Lori Loughlin. Unfortunately for Toni – while Michael is in Love with Deborah Anne, Toni is in love with Michael. And I think we can all see where this is going.

On the last day of school Michael receives a mysterious love letter but he doesn’t know who it came from. His idiot friends convince him that it came from Deborah Anne – and he believes them. But he knows he cant straight up ask her out – so Toni suggests he write her a love letter. Great Idea – Michael pours his heart and soul – and a lot of Hallmark Card clichés – into this letter and gives it to Toni to give to Deborah Anne. But Toni opens the letter and finds that it’s every bit as shitty as every hallmark card ever written – so Toni rewrites the letter and gives it to Deborah Anne. Deborah Anne is blown away – she wants to meet the anonymous author who has stolen her heart. So – Toni sets them up on a date where Michael is able to confess his horny admiration for Deborah Anne. The two hit it off.

Michael decides to write another shitty letter – which Toni once again rewrites into a Cyrano-Like prose – that once again sweeps Deborah Anne off her feet. This time though – the two letters mistakenly fall into the hands of both Michael and Deborah Annes parents. Through a series of “oopsie daisies” – Michaels Dad thinks that Deborah Anne’s mom gave him the first anonymous letter. And Deborah Anne’s Mom thinks that Michaels dad gave her the second anonymous letter. Then when each of their spouses stumble across the letters, they assume that Michaels Dad and Deborah Anne’s mom are having an affair.

It all comes to a head when all four couples get together for Bridge Night at Deborah Anne’s house. Him and Her – Her and Him – Them and Them – all together. A big fight breaks out when they start accusing each other of cheating. When it’s revealed that the letters were from Michael to Deborah Anne, all the parents realize they over-reacted and jumped to the “sort of” wrong conclusions.

Michael has since become disillusioned with Deborah Anne – once he found out that there’s not a whole lot there that’s interesting – other than a great set of tits. She confronts him with the letters – upon taking a look at them, he sees that these are not the letters he wrote. Recognizing the handwriting, Michael puts the 2 and 2 together – he realizes that Toni rewrote the letters to Deborah Anne – and thus wrote the original love letter to him.

Realizing that his true love has been right in front of him the whole time, he rushes over to see Toni – but by this time it’s too late – Toni has already left for “The School Afloat” – where she will spend her entire senior year. Desperate to tell her how he feels, Michael races down to the harbor minutes to late as he sees Toni sailing off with all the other students. Desperate – he yells that he loves her and if she feels the same. Of course she does – and with that, the two both dive into the ocean and swim toward each other.
